Definition

Basic is referring to or forming the base or basis of something which is belonging to, or at, a very simple or low level. Something is basic when it has no additions.  The basics are the essential parts or facts.  A basic chemical contains a base, a substance with pH level greater than 7.

The word is derived from 19c base, relating to the chemistry term above.  The origins of base are much older.
