A fact is something known to have happened or to exist.  Specifically, a fact is a true datum about one or more aspects of a circumstance.  A fact may indicate findings derived through a process of evaluation, including review of testimony or direct observation; as distinguishable from matters of inference or speculation.

The word comes from Latin factum meaning "a thing done" such as a deed, act or achievement.
