Definition

In genetics, XY is the normal complement of sex chromosomes in a male.  Primary sex determination in mammals is strictly chromosomal, with females having XX and male XY.

The XY determination system is credited to several geneticists at the beginning of the 20th century, including Nettie Stevens, Edmund Beecher Wilson and Theophilus Painter.
