Definition

To master something is to overcome, defeat or be skilled.  A master is someone with outstanding skill in a particular activity.  A master is a fully qualified craftsman or tradesman, allowed to train and direct others. A master is someone, especially a man, who commands or controls, or is the owner of a dog, slave, etc. A master is an original document, film or recording from which copies are made. 

The word originates from Latin magister, from magnus which means "great".
