Definition
DNA is short for deoxyribonucleic acid and is the main constituent of the chromosomes of nearly all organisms. DNA is responsible for the transmission of hereditary characteristics from parents to offspring. The DNA molecule consists of two polynucleotide chains in the form of a double helix. DNA is self-replicating and plays a central role in protein synthesis.
DNA research first started in the mid 19th century, but DNA structure and the double helix model are attributed to Alexander Todd, Francis Crick, James Watson, Rosalind Franklin and Raymond Gosling in the 1950s.
