Definition

Chemistry is the scientific study of the properties and behavior of matter (elements and compounds).  Chemistry studies the transformations that materials undergo, and the energy that is released or absorbed during them.

The word originates from the 16c word alchemy, which in turn may have originated from Medieval Latin alkimia, from Arabic al-kimiya, and finally from Greek khemeioa, all meaning "alchemy".  Alchemy is perhaps from an old name for Egypt (Khemia, literally "land of black earth"), or from Greek khymatos which means "that which is poured out".
